There
are two kinds of pulp. When mechanical pulp is being produced,
the wood chips are passed through rapidly rotating grinding
discs. This type of pulp is to make paper for newspapers (newsprint)
and other types of paper.
In a Chemical pulpmill, the chips are boiled with chemicals.
This pulp is used to make copy paper and paperboard. When
boiled, around half of the wood dissolves in the boiling liquid.
This is called black lye. The remainder becomes pulp - a paste
consisting of wood fibres 1.5-3 cm in length.
The
pulp is separated from the black lye in a washer. The black
lye is returned to the mill's recycling system and after dehydration
it is burned to produce energy. This makes a chemical pulp mill
self-sufficient in energy.
Often surplus energy is produced, which can be used by nearby
paper mills In the bleaching plant, the pulp is purified using
a variety of bleaching chemicals, such as oxygen, ozone, hydrogen
peroxide and chlorine dioxide.
Today, bleaching plants produce very little effluent, and
if the process is a closed one - there is no effluent at all,
since it is recycled with the black lye and burned.
The
purified pulp can either be sold as sheet pulp or converted
into paper directly.
The wet pulp is dried in a drying machine and cut into bales.
These are stored prior to shipment, often by sea, to a customer
terminal. From the terminal the pulp is delivered by road or
rail direct to the customer, who converts it into paper.
