It’s probably what you see in your head when you hear the name ‘Hollywood’. At the top of Mount Lee, Griffith Park, lies one of the most iconic signs of all time. Of course, in true Hollywood style, the letters are 45-foot tall and the word is a whopping 350-foot wide. That is bigger than the Statue of Liberty lying down. The colossal size of this sign perfectly represents Hollywood itself. Big, brash and bold.
It was constructed and installed in 1923 and originally read ‘Hollywoodland’. Built to advertise a new housing development in the hills, it was only intended to be displayed for 18 months. As the movie industry grew, however, the sign became an internationally recognised symbol and it’s outlived its intended moment by 94 years and counting.
The sign is symbolic of everything that Hollywood stands for; a larger than life attitude and a firm belief that size does matter.
